And not just any dog, a huge dog.
The size wasn't by choice, but he needed a home and seemed to fit us. He's a three year old Central Asian Shepherd (no, we'd never heard of them either) that was found wandering basically in the desert with a collar on but no microchip id. He was then at the shelter for six months, where the only people that wanted to adopt him were obviously wanting him for dog fighting due to his size (140lbs/70kg to be specific). He'd be hopeless at that since he really is a giant teddy bear who just wants as much love as possible.
We have actually been fostering him since October, but he's one of us now, so is staying put. Cat introduction is going slowly, but we are working on it.
The cropped ears and tail are typical of the breed as they are used in Russia for guarding sheep from wolves and bears, so are cropped in case of fights. He is a guard dog for sure and doesn't like anyone he doesn't know coming near us or his house. Woe betide anyone coming into our house without being introduced, as the parents of one of Michael's friends found out when they came to pick their son up without knocking. Luckily, as Samson skidded on the marble floor, they had time to duck into the living room and close the door and then we could introduce them!
The big moose is ours now, and we just love him. And thankfully our housekeeper loves him too so is happy to keep an eye on him and the rest of the menagerie while we visit a good lot of you lovely people in the US.
